Some
Historical Background For
centuries, the countries of Scotland and England have been at odds and
at war. Times of peace between the two nations never lasted long, namely
because of the desires of England to control or conquer it's northern
neighbor.
Several events led up to the incredibly unpopular union in 1707. One was
the Darien Scheme, a plan for Scottish colonization at the Isthmus of
Darien. The illegal monarch of the time, William of Orange, did all he
could to make this Scottish venture (with high financial stakes for
Scotland) fail, and when it did, Scotland's economy was reduced to an
all time low. The Whigs of the English Parliament wanted to control
Scotland's monarchy (and in turn, Scotland itself). They passed the
Aliens Act in 1705 which would actively and severely hamper Scottish
trade overseas and brand Scots "aliens" if Scotland did not
accept the Hanovarian royal line. The resulting tension threatened war,
but England was already at war with France and did not want war with
Scotland. So the English Parliament suggested a union as a compromise.
Despite great unpopularity and uproar, enough Scottish nobles and
commissioners in the Scottish Parliament agreed to the terms of the
Treaty of Union, unequal and debilitating as they were to Scotland's
sovereignty, and it became law in 1707. Their decision was undoubtedly
influenced by English bribes of money, title, and land. Indeed, part of
the terms of the Treaty itself allowed for a sum of English money to be
provided to Scotland as consolation for incurring the English national
debt and as recompense for the Darien disaster. Thus Robert Burns'
famous words:
'we are bought and sold for English gold, such a parcel o' rogues in a
nation!" ------------------ Today
In the 21st century, it is not England itself that hinders Scotland. It
is the fact that the two are bound in an unfair "union" that
prevents either nation from enjoying the benefits of sovereignty.
The enemy is not the English people by any means. Those who choose to
put down this problem to "the English" are missing the whole
point. The instigators today are the Unionists in both Scotland and
England - those who uphold the crippling union to be good for the
countries involved, actively working to uphold and preserve it.
Unfortunately, unionists abound in places of high influence, including
the British government and parliament and the media throughout Scotland.
Whomever controls a nation's media controls what the people are allowed
to be aware of, to a great extent. This is why nationalist arguments
seem so hidden from mainstream understanding in Scotland. Largely all
you see on national TV, radio, and in the newspapers are unionist
viewpoints upheld.

Scotland's
Future This
channel of Simplyscottish.com is designed to raise awareness and concern
about the dangers of the "union" and to encourage positive
steps towards a sovereign Scotland. You might be surprised at the truths
revealed in these pages, and the material in this section will most
likely fluster some Scots who have grown accustomed to the status quo.
But when you find yourself about to mouth the word "radical"
or "unrealistic", think of the great Scottish patriot Sir
William Wallace, who no doubt would have been accused of similar things.
For it is inherently true that you should always stand up for the truth,
even if you stand alone. And the truth is this - that until Scotland is
sovereign and can control its own matters completely and without
hindrance, the nation will never be able to release its potential.
Scotland's future is the most important thing to consider about the
land. If you enjoy celebrating and enjoying Scotland's culture and
history but fail to help protect her future, you are abandoning her.
