Travel Guide: Money Matters

In Scotland, the currency used is Scottish Pound Sterling. Three Scottish commercial banks -

Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland and Clydesdale Bank - issue their own notes with their own similar designs. Although all banks in Scotland have the right to print notes, only the above three choose to do so.                                                                   A Scottish twenty pound note

The first bank in Europe to issue paper money currency was the Bank of Scotland. When Scotland and England were shackled together in a "union", the Articles of Union preserved a Scottish Mint:
XVI. That from and after the Union, the Coin shall be of the same standard and value throughout the United Kingdom, as now in England, and a Mint shall be continued in Scotland, under the same Rules as the Mint in England.

Despite this, the Scottish Mint was abolished, and the only mint today is the mint in England. This is just one example of why Scotland and England should not be involved in a union. For more on the problems caused by a "union", click here.

Important!

Scottish bank notes are equal in value and stature to English bank notes, and both are accepted in each country. Do not accept a lesser exchange rate for Scottish notes than for English ones - anywhere. If you do, report it to a local banking authority or tell us, and we will file a complaint.
