Poems - Marilyn Nelligan

Scotland

Nelligan penned this poem in February 2002 after failing to see Scotland represented at the Olympics (again).

Yellow; Blood Red, Upright Lion
Tongue to Lash From Minds Well-Read
Claws Fearless, Dauntless; Full of Courage
A Tail Of Terror When Opposed
In the Name of Integrity, Honour and Truth

The Flag is Gone, It Does Not Fly
The Stone is Gone; Papers Washed To Sea
Live In Secret; Pride Remains
Royal Oak has Disappeared
Hearts are Strong and All Remember

The Flag is Gone, It Does Not Fly
Sword, Salt Peatre, Skean D'hu
One Boat, 2 Coats, the Mast Sets Sail
For Lands Unknown; Success or Fail
Hearts are Strong and All Remember

The Flag is Gone, It Does Not Fly
No Dress to Wear, No Pipes to Play
Nor Homes, Nor Lands
All Are Surrendered
But Hearts are Strong; Hearts Remember

The Flag is Gone, It Does Not Fly
By Hook or Crook At Every Turn
We'll Take our God in Force or Free
To Another Place To Live and Be
And Hearts are Strong and Hearts Remember.

The Flag Is Hoisted High and Mighty
It Proudly Flaps In The Wind
But Where's Its Fearless, Dauntless, Courage?
Hearts Have All Forgotten

The Flag Now Flies But Others Tell
Of Days of Y'ore, A Different Tale
The Words and Names Have All Been Changed
Hearts are Broken; All Is Forgotten

The Flag Now Flies, It Has Returned
It Is Raised For All To See
O'er Land Not Ours, Nor Fish at Sea
O'er Broken Hearts and Bended Knees

The Flag Now Flies, Pride of a Nation
The Dress is Worn; Pipes Are Playing
When All Flags Gather, This Flag is Missing.
The Flag has Merged and With a Veto
Hearts are Broken; Hearts Have Forgotten

Divide and Conquer; It So Did Work
To Far Flung Lands To Then Forget
Forget at Home; Forget Away
Forget All of Our Yesterdays.
